Versailles
The kings of France lived here until the French Revolution.
Louis XIII's hunting lodge was turned into a magnificent palace by the Sun King, Louis XIV, who wanted his gardens to be as beautiful as his palace. His wish was granted in the masterpiece created by Le Nôtre, with the assistance of Le Brun, Colbert and Mansart.
Visit Versailles and discover the famous Hall of Mirrors, the King's Grand Apartments and the Museum of French History. Admire the Grand Trianon, the most elegant of all the buildings, built by Louis XIV for his trysts with Madame de Montespan. Don't forget Marie Antoinette's estate, with the Petit Trianon and gardens, where she lived a simpler life than at the palace.
Or why not enjoy a musical fountain spectacular as you stroll round the gardens? The famous Grandes Eaux Musicales are simply unmissable and the evening shows in summer quite magical!
Tip: Set aside a full day to visit the estate at your leisure. Booking in advance on the Palace website gives you faster access. Try to arrive before 10:00AM to avoid the crowds.
